jobless claims which have some sandy issues involved or the fiscal cliff talks? >> definitely the fiscal cliff. what you were talking about yesterday, boehner's comments really turned things around for the markets, all this sense of optimism all of a sudden. we saw the markets go from down triple digits for the dow up to triple digits. we haven't seen a swing like that since over a year ago. it's been october of 2011 was the last time it happened. it's definitely the fiscal cliff driving things. we heard commentary from lloyd blankfein, between that and the lead story -- one of the top stories on the front page of the "wall street journal" suggesting the president is flexible on the tax hikes, that sounds like a deal might get done. you see a gain of 50 or 60 points. gdp up 2.7% from 2%. there was concerning things when you dig into the numbers, it's all fiscal cliff all the time here, chuck. >> oh, hopefully, as you guys say, it will all -- people will rise above, right, becky? >> that's right. >> i know. i see the button. up next, we're taking a deep dive into the u.s. relationship wit

. as expected, initial unemployment claims surged after hurricane sandy devastated parts of the northeast. but today's numbers, from the department of labor, show the second straight week of decline. evidence of steady improvement in the labor market. the good news keeps on coming. the commerce department reports economic growth of the third quarter was actually better than first reported. the initial estimate had a gdp growth of just 2%. this morning the commerce department revised its estimates to show growth of 2.7%. that's the best gdp figure since the end of 2011 and the second best of the last three years. so things are looking up. president obama has an improving economy on his hands in spite of all the do-nothing congress that's going on in washington. anyone who still thinks that the term "do-nothing congress" is just a little too harsh, take a look at this. 906 bills were r passed from january 1947 through december of 1948. by the body that president harry truman listed and labeled as the do-nothing congress. the current congress with one month to go has passed 196 bills. by far

in infrastructure, which we desperately need after hurricane -- or we call it super storm sandy that hit new york, that hit new jersey, that hit connecticut, that hit delaware, that hit maryland. we now see that our infrastructure has to be what we call hardened, made stronger. we can do that if we invest in our people. so, madam president, the president has offered a very clear plan that takes us off the fiscal cliff that is fair. we have 27 days to do the right thing. the senate already passed the tax cuts for 98% of the people. all we're asking is for the house to do that, match us. then we can get back to the table and figure out a way to soften the blow of the automatic spending cuts. we could look at tax reform. and i want to just say this about tack reform. when our colleagues complain about tax rates and say well, we would rather close loopholes, watch out. in order to raise the kind of funds we need to raise to lower this deficit, you're looking at the two biggest --quote, unquote -- deductions. one is for your mortgage and one is for charitable, and i would ask rhetorically what billion
